Moreton Bay Swimming Club – 2024 Queensland State Swimming Championships Report

The 2024 Queensland State Swimming Championships was an incredible week of competition for Moreton Bay Swimming Club (MBS), showcasing the strength, resilience, and determination of our athletes. Across seven days of action at the Sleeman Aquatic Centre, MBS swimmers delivered standout performances, personal bests (PBs), and unforgettable moments.

Overall Summary:

  • Club Point Score: MBS finished 15th overall, a testament to the team’s depth and performance.
  • Total Swims: 179 (inc. international)
  • Personal Bests: 121
  • Medals: Multiple gold, silver, and bronze across individual and relay events
  • Athletes Competing in Finals: Over 30 finals appearances across all age groups

Key Highlights:

  • Relay Day Success (Day 1): Of 15 relay teams, 14 improved their entry times. The 14-year-old girls’ medley relay team secured bronze, and the mixed freestyle relay team claimed silver.
  • Individual Achievements: Standout performances included:
      • Angus Cran: Gold medals in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Butterfly.
      • Siena Gibson: Silver medals in the 400m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly.
      • Rose Purcell: Gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle.
      • Mixed Freestyle Relay Team (Day 1): Silver medal.
      • 14-year-old Girls’ Medley Relay Team (Day 1): Bronze medal.
      • Rebecca Whiting: Bronze medal in the 400m IM.
      • Rosy Ryan: Silver medal in the 1500m Freestyle.
      • Sean: Bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke.
      • Angus Cran consistently excelling in butterfly events, securing gold medals in both the 100m and 200m Butterfly. His 200m time of 2:05.42 placed him among the All-Time Top 10 for 14-year-olds in Australian swimming history.
      • Siena Gibson earning multiple medals, including silver in the 400m Freestyle and a final-day silver in the 100m Butterfly.
      • Rose Purcell dominating distance events, highlighted by a gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle with a remarkable 26-second PB.
      • Harry Gibson dropping a total of 12 seconds in the 200m Freestyle over the season, capping his championships with a PB of 2:08.0

Coaches’ Impact: Coaches Rick and Kevin were instrumental in preparing the athletes, emphasizing strategy, recovery, and resilience throughout the week. Their leadership helped guide swimmers to achieve not only PBs but also significant personal growth in their performances.

Team Spirit and Resilience: The championships tested the stamina of our athletes, with the final days demanding focus on recovery and mental toughness. Swimmers rose to the challenge, with Day 6 earning the nickname “Fly Day” due to the dominance of MBS in butterfly events, and Day 7 highlighting the resilience and determination of our team.
